The Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017, has been removed from the Government Business in the Senate.

The Minister has announced plans to re-introduce amendments with variations, proposed to take effect in July next year.

It is anticipated that the requirement for English Language ability will be amended to a “modest” level.

Current applications lodged before 20th April 2017 will be assessed against the law as presently existing.

Further applications made before 1 July 2018 will also be processed under existing law without the proposed amendments.
